Important! The baggage rules below apply to purchases made as of September 25, 2017. If you ticket was purchased before this date, please click here to read the baggage rules in effect for your trip. For codeshare and interline flights (operated by other airlines), check the baggage rules of the operating airline, regardless of what class you’re traveling.
For ticket purchases made by September 24, 2017 (tickets with baggage limits in kilos), the purchase of additional weight must be made directly and exclusively at the airports.
Hand Baggage:
This is transported for free by the adult or child passenger in the cabin, is the responsibility of the passenger, and must be within stipulated size and weight limits:
Maximum weight: 10 kg (adult or child) + 1 personal item.
Hand baggage size: at most 35 cm x 55 cm x 25 cm
Personal size item: at most 45 cm x 35 cm x 20 cm.
The baggage should be checked if it surpasses these limits.

Checked Baggage:
This is transported in the plane’s cargo hold and follows stipulated size and weight limits.

International flights with domestic connections (O6)
Clients with reservations on Avianca Brasil (O6) flights that arrive on or board international flights operated by partner airlines (Interline/ Codeshare/ Star Alliance) can follow the baggage allowance for the partner airline responsible for the longest international leg of the trip.
In order for passengers to have access to this courtesy, the following criteria should be observed:
- Travel one or more legs with a partner airline (Interline/ Codeshare/ Star Alliance) and at least one leg with Avianca Brasil (O6).
- The connection should be on the same ticket in order for the baggage allowance to be honored.

Important! The baggage allowance of the airline responsible for the longest international leg is described on the passenger’s ticket. Additional baggage allowances linked to miles programs of other airlines will not be honored, except those from Star Alliance Gold and Silver clients.

Hand Baggage
Hand Baggage Allowances
You can transport, free of charge and under your responsibility, one item of hand baggage and one personal item in the cabin, as long as it follows stipulated size and weight limits.
Baggage
Size: 115 cm, adding up the three dimensions, being at most 35 cm x 55 cm x 25 cm.
Personal Item
Size: 100 cm, adding up the three dimensions, being at most 45 cm x 35 cm x 20 cm.
Weight: hand baggage should weigh no more than 10 kg.

The transportation of hand baggage should always follow size and weight limitations imposed by ANAC Resolution 400. If these limits are surpassed, the baggage should be checked.
What to bring?
Free personal item allowed in addition to hand baggage:
- A hand purse, briefcase, small backpack or equipment that can be stowed under the passenger’s seat or in an airplane compartment;
- Electronic equipment;
- Reading material to be used during flight;
- Baby food to be consumed during flight;
Objects allowed only in hand baggage:
- Money;
- Trading papers, stocks, or other securities;
- Personal documents and other kinds of documents;
- Electronic equipment and accessories (cell phones and accessories, camera, laptop, tablet, mp3 player, videorecorder, pen drive, and other media);
- Photographs and albums;
- Medicine;
- Fragile objects;
- Valuable objects;
- Dry ice (maximum of 2.5kg per passenger, in packaging that allows for passage of carbon dioxide);
- Keys, etc.
Additional items – in addition to the items mentioned above, such as hand baggage and a personal item, you can carry, under your care and at no additional cost, some of the items below:
- A jacket;
- An umbrella;
- A Duty Free bag up to 5 kg;
- Technical assistance items (crutches, cane, and similar items).
What not to bring?
Items not allowed in hand baggage:
- Weapons: any firearm: hunting rifle; replica or imitation weapon, including lighters in the form of a firearm; paintball gun or similar; diving spear gun; part of weapon (except for scope); compressed air pistol or rifle; starter pistol; flare gun; heat gun; device capable of generating electric current (Taser); crossbow; brass knuckles.
- Sharp or pointed objects: saber, scissors, dagger, sword, knife, multi-tool with sharp retractable or foldable blade, metallic or not, measuring more than 6 cm (not including hilt or handle); long blade with rounded tip and dulled edge, metallic or not, measuring more than 10 cm; razor blade for shaving, except disposable blades in cartridges; martial arts equipment; ice skates; tools such as: electric drill, box cutter, saw; harpoon and spear; arrow, dart, grappling hook, hatchet, rake, spurs; icepick; stiletto, screwdriver; cleaver and pocketknife; ski pole; hypodermic needle (unless accompanied by medical prescription); knitting needle and sewing needle.
- Instruments with blunt edges: lever or similar metallic bar; tools such as: hammer, plier, wrench; sporting material that may be used threateningly, such as paddle, skateboard, fishing pole, baton, pool cue, baseball bat, polo mallet, golf club, hockey stick, etc.; socket wrench; truncheon and martial arts equipment.
- Explosive or inflammable substances: explosive cap; cartridge emitting smoke; detonator and fuse; percussion cap; explosive and replica or imitation of explosive; signal flare and gunpowder; pyrotechnical material and fireworks; any aerosol, except for medical use or personal grooming, not exceeding four cans per person and volume of each can be less than 300 ml or 300g; liquor with more than 70% ABV; spontaneous combustion or ignition material; matches, except in packaging for daily use; flammable solids such as matches and articles of easy ignition in any quantity; flammable liquids (for example gasoline, diesel oil, methanol); substance that emits flammable gases when in contact with water; munition and projectiles; compressed gas of any kind, such as: butane, propane, extinguishers, oxygen canisters of any type and quantity; mines, plastic explosives, powder, dynamite, military explosives and grenades.
- Chemical and toxic substances: oxidizing material, such as powdered lime, chemical bleach, and peroxide; chlorine for pools and hot tubs; corrosive material such as mercury, acid, alkaloid, battery acid, and bleach in any quantity (except in medical instruments such as a thermometer); infectious or biohazardous material (for example, infected blood, bacteria, or virus); radioactive material (medical and commercial isotopes); “paralyzing” sprays (pepper spray and tear gas); poisonous (toxic) substances, such as arsenic, cyanide, insecticide, and defoliant in any quantity; and fire extinguishers.
- Other: alarm device (except on wristwatches and electronic equipment permitted onboard); electric scooter; material whose magnetic field is great enough to interfere in aircraft equipment and not related to permitted electronic devices, such as cell phone, laptop, tablet, or electronic game that has its use controlled onboard the airplane.
Some items will be shipped only via Avianca Cargo, following evaluation and approval. The check-in agent will be responsible for evaluating the content and indicating the best treatment for transport. Always notify attendants of the content of your baggage when checking in.

Checked baggage allowance
Checked baggage is that which is carried in the airplane’s cargo hold.

Important:
- For all flights, the dimensions of each piece should not exceed 158 cm. For codeshare and interline flights (operated by other airlines), check with the airline for baggage rules, regardless of class.
- For tickets purchased before June 30 on international flights to/from the United States, the weight of the baggage is limited to 32 kg per piece. For tickets purchased starting July 1, the baggage allowance is up to 23 kg per piece.
- For purchases made by Sept. 24, 2017, please see the rules for checked baggage.
- Baggage can weigh no more than 45kg. If it exceeds this limit, baggage can be shipped via cargo or divided into two volumes, with the excess piece paid for.
- The maximum weight allowed to/from Chile is 25kg.
- Maximum of additional pieces purchased: 10 pieces.
- Maximum number of pieces dispatched: 15 pieces.

Avianca does not transport oxygen cylinders, be they made of iron or aluminum.

Special items
General information
- These rules refer only to the legs of the journey operated by Avianca Brasil (O6). Should your trip include connections with other airlines, always check the other carriers’ baggage policies.
- Specific norms exist for some special items. Transporting objects not included in this list is subject to analysis and approval by Avianca Brasil.
- Avianca Brasil has the right to refuse any baggage that puts the safety of the flight at risk. This refusal can be the result of the weight, size or type of item not recommended for transport on the aircraft. For example: large musical instruments or sporting equipment, or any item that cannot be carried in the plane’s cargo hold.
- Special baggage must be confirmed at least 48 hours before travel with our Reservation Office by calling (11) 4004-4040.
- All items should be properly packaged in order to be accepted as baggage.
- The size of checked bags cannot be more than 158 cm (adding height, length, and depth). Volumes surpassing 158 cm but smaller than 230 cm (adding height, length, and depth) are subject to additional baggage costs, while items surpassing 230 cm should be transported as cargo. - Equipment listed here are subject to excess baggage charges depending on weight, quantity, and/or size.

Musical Instruments
Accepted items: various musical items.
Packaging: all equipment should be packaged in their original containers or similar packaging in order to protect it fully from bumps, impede any internal shifting or equipment from falling out.
Restrictions: musical instruments can be considered hand baggage as long as it complies with limits of 10 kg and the sum of its three dimensions is not greater than 115 cm. If it surpasses those limits, it should be checked.
Cello
Due to the instrument’s fragility, the cello should be carried on board and placed in a reserved seat (as if it were a passenger).
Conditions: the packaging should be rigid in order to avoid harm to the instrument, to passengers, and to the flight crew. Reservations and payment should be made beforehand by contacting the reservation office.
Restrictions: the transportation of a cello does not allow passengers to check additional baggage. Dimensions cannot exceed 1.60 m x 70 cm x 60 cm. The maximum weight (including the instrument case) cannot be more than 70 kg.
Baby articles
Baby stroller or Baby chair
All passengers with babies (0 to 23 months) or children (from 2 years old up to 12 years old incomplete) can take 1 (one) baby stroller or 1 (one) baby chair in addition to their allowance for checked baggage or hand baggage, as long as it is within size limits.
Should a passenger wish to check a baby stroller but not be traveling with the baby or the child, the stroller counts as one item in the baggage allowance.
Perishable Products
Domestic Flights
Perishable products and food, such as fish, crustaceans and other seafood, fresh or frozen, should be placed in packaging that is leak-proof, cannot be easily opened, and does not emit odors.
The product should be internally wrapped in waterproof plastic and the external packaging should be made of Styrofoam coated in resistant plastic. Ice to conserve the item should be in the form of gel and wrapped in plastic isolated from the product.
Should the packaging be deemed inadequate and liable to damage the airplane or baggage/cargo of fellow passengers, Avianca reserves the right to not authorize its transportation.
International Flights
Seeking to avoid introducing pests and diseased animal agents, government authorities regulate the entry of animals, plants, seeds, agrochemicals, and certain foods without prior import authorization and sanitary certification.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Ranching, and Supply warns that it is forbidden to enter Brazil with any animal or plant – including food, seeds, veterinary products or agrochemicals – without import authorization and sanitary or phytosanitary certification.
This prohibition seeks to impede the introduction of plant pests and animal disease agents that could compromise the health and production of Brazilian agriculture. Consult the rules and forms that need to be filled out on the website of the Federal Revenue Service and present yourself to the international agricultural monitoring agency upon collecting your baggage.
Seeking to avoid the introduction of pests and animal agents carrying diseases, government agencies regulate the entry of animals, plants, seeds, agrochemical products, and specific foods without prior import authorization and sanitary certification.
Objects subject to prior authorization
Objects subject to prior authorization
Some objects must be approved by the airline before being transported due to their weight, size, or type. Approval is required for:
- Some musical instruments;
- Art objects (statues, paintings, sculptures, etc.);
- Fragile or perishable objects (acceptable as long as properly packaged);
- Live animals (depending on the route, length of flight, size of animal and available accommodation). Find details at Transporting Animals.
Restricted Articles
Household appliances: some items cannot be boarded or there are restrictions on transporting them on flights operated by Avianca Brasil (O6) due to their weight and size, such as:
- Stoves, washing machines, or similar. This kind of material should be shipped via the cargo service. In this case, please get in touch with Avianca Cargo to learn about requirements for the service.
- Refrigerators and freezers cannot be transported because they contain gas which is considered dangerous for airplanes. For more information about these items, please get in touch with Avianca Cargo.
- Microwaves, mixers, coffee machines, and other household appliances can be transported as checked baggage or hand baggage, as long as they are properly packaged and respect restrictions. Please note that boarding any of these items could be refused due to any irregularity.
- Permitted 1 (one) TV or monitor up to 42" weighing up to 23 kg per passenger. This equipment is part of the baggage allowance and must be packed in appropriate boxes to maintain the integrity of the appliance and may be refused if there is any irregularity. Televisions / Monitors with sizes between 43 "and 50" or weighing between 23 kg and 45 kg will be subject to excess charge (Check the values charged by Avianca Brasil). If they exceed these dimensions or weight, they can not be accepted as checked baggage.
Medication or hygiene products needed for the trip, transported as hand baggage or checked. The total quantity of these articles per passenger cannot exceed the limit of 2 kg or 2 liters, and the quantity in each package cannot exceed 0.5 kg or 0.5 liter.
Articles for smokers, excluding lighters with flammable liquids, which are acceptable only when carried on the passenger’s person, never as hand baggage;
Alcoholic beverages - up to 70% ABV in recipients no larger than 1 liter and totaling no more than 5 liters per person. The origin of the beverage should be industrial, following rules of S.I.E. or S.I.F. regarding the ABV measurement, and this should be duly marked on the packaging. These recipients are required to be well-packaged and the use of a protection bag is required. Avianca does not provide this packaging and so it is the responsibility of the passenger to provide it.
Beverages (liquids in general) – All beverages that will be checked should be industrialized, labeled, and sealed (with original factory packaging). For example: juice, oil, soft drinks, water, alcoholic drinks, and other beverages.
Sporting Goods

Surfing equipment
Accepted items: surfboard, stand-up paddle board, bodyboard, windsurf board and its respective sail, kitesurf and its kite bag and respective maintenance items.
Conditions: only equipment with proper packaging (bag or case) will be accepted. No cloth bags (sock).
Restrictions: Avianca only accepts up to three (3) boards per case, measuring up to 300 linear centimeters.
Fishing Equipment
Items accepted: fishing rod, net, boots, and respective maintenance items
Packaging: rods and reels should be in a completely closed case, impeding any shifting of equipment or equipment from falling out.
Restrictions: only one case with up to 2 rods is allowed, along with one package with other equipment.
Golf Equipment
Items accepted: clubs, balls, and respective maintenance items.
Packaging: all items should be in a completely closed case impeding any shifting of equipment or equipment from falling out.
Diving Equipment
Items accepted: snorkel, pressure gauge, harpoon, fins, float, weight belt, regulator, mask, and underwater lamp (disconnected from battery).
Packaging: all items should be in original packaging or equivalent, so that it protects them completely from bumps and impeding any shifting of equipment or equipment from falling out. For items with batteries, these should be disconnected and packaged separately.
Restrictions: oxygen tanks will not be accepted.
Skiing Equipment
Items accepted: snow/water skis, snowboard/sandboard, poles, boots, wakeboard and respective maintenance items.
Packaging: all items should be in original packaging or equivalent, so that it protects them completely from bumps and impeding any shifting of equipment or equipment from falling out.
Bowling Equipment
Items accepted: balls, gloves, pins, and respective maintenance items
Packaging: all items should be in original packaging or equivalent, so that it protects them completely from bumps and impeding any shifting of equipment or equipment from falling out
Archery Equipment

Cycling Equipment
Items accepted: leisure/racing bicycles and respective maintenance items
Packaging: the bicycle should be in a rigid case, a bag for bicycles, or a box built to transport bicycles.
Skateboard Equipment
Items accepted: deck, complete skateboard with wheels, and respective maintenance and protection items.
Conditions: items should be checked.

Restriction: electric skateboards (hoverboards) will not be accepted.
Kayaks and Canoes: Avianca Brasil does not transport kayaks and canoes.
